WHY I DO IT
To stand with my fellow man (or woman), with no need to posture, in a shared prayer.
Music and song are my refuge in what seems like a chaotic world. Spreading love and goodwill in the material I choose; in this art I love and practice. It's a vicarious therapy and a fulfillment, thank G-d, second to none.
PERFORMATIVE SONGWRITING
Performance is part of my writing process, it is a taste a freedom in the highest form of giving. Pieces of my own work or others, of the depths, get turned round and alchemized because you are there with me. I interpret as go along.
Songwriting in this way is like a confession but with a difference because it is not a compulsive unburdening to manage anxiety. It’s transforming pain or anger or any negative fire into something beautiful, structured, meaningful. The alchemy is not just an unburdening, it serves an audience, as well as myself.
People tell me they find their own meaning, their own resonance. My confession becomes their catharsis also.
Simultaneously doing something for others, is what “fixes” the writing from any originally held darker perspective. Tapping into the healing of self understanding from a generosity position. This is not my only outlet for processing, I do other internal work, spiritual direction. but this live art processes is what consistently makes for the more earthly healing accompaniment.
